Biography
The Full Story
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE) is a groundbreaking brass ensemble from Chicago, Illinois. The group is made up of seven brothers — all sons of the late Kelan Phil Cohran, a visionary trumpeter, composer, and founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) who also played in Sun Ra’s Arkestra.
Growing up immersed in their father’s musical philosophy, the brothers began performing together on the streets of Chicago, developing a raw, electrifying style that would eventually carry them to stages across the globe.
Over two decades, HBE has collaborated with Prince, Erykah Badu, Gorillaz, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Wu-Tang Clan, De La Soul, Masta Ace, and Tony Allen. They were instrumental in arranging horns for Maxwell’s Pretty Wings and authored the theme music for The Hunger Games.
With tours spanning six continents and performances at the world’s most prestigious venues, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has solidified their position as the founders of the modern brass revival. Their live shows are legendary — high-energy, deeply spiritual, and completely unforgettable.
